Walking Access Consultation meeting for Wanganui

27 June 2006

The Wanganui and surrounding area communities will have an opportunity to have their say on the issues surrounding walking access to and along rivers, lakes and the coast at a public meeting being held in Wanganui on Wednesday 12 July.

The consultation is being carried out by the Walking Access Consultation Panel – a group established to provide an independent perspective and an independent report on the issue to the Government.

Panel members have a wide range of experience and expertise in rural, environmental, recreation and land use issues.

The Wanganui meeting will be attended by panel members:
John Forbes, Mayor of Opotiki District Council and Chairman of the Rural Sector Group of the Local Government New Zealand National Council; and
Maggie Bayfield, former acting Executive of Rural Women New Zealand.

The panel has proposed a key aim and principles around the issue which are set out in a discussion document – Outdoor Walking Access.

While the consultation meeting is an opportunity for people to discuss the issues and potential solutions face to face, the panel would also like to receive written submissions and the closing date for these is 28 July 2006.
